China's biggest political meeting of the year is coming up. It's an opportunity for the rubber-stamp legislature, the National People's Congress, to announce both new laws and to tout the country's achievements. Expect the leadership, including Xi Jinping, to celebrate the eradication of all poverty in the country. This has been a major talking point of Beijing's. But things are not always as they seem. • In 2015, Chinese president Xi Jinping vowed to eradicate extreme poverty and to build a moderately prosperous society by the communist party's 100th anniversary later this year. That goal has already been achieved, according to official figures. With all 832 poor counties officially lifted out of poverty, Beijing says it has made history. Some impoverished rural residents say they're thankful of the government -- but not everyone feels better off.
