Improvised Tourniquet • If bleeding cannot be controlled with direct pressure and a pressure dressing a tourniquet can be added at least 1 hand width above the bleeding (go above joint if close). • Improvised tourniquets are not as effective as commercial tourniquets and do take practice to become proficient at as they take longer to apply. Focus should be to provide well aimed direct pressure to source of bleeding to start as well as manual firm pressure on bleeding for at least 5 minutes.
