Simulations have long been used for design of defence systems. They can partially replace physical testing too. This can result in large amounts of savings both in time and resources. One such product that is a good candidate for design and testing on simulations is Fin Stabilized Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (FSAPDS) ammunition. The ammunition fired from tank has four distinct phases (a) Internal Ballistics (propellant burning and balloting (b) Intermediate Ballistics (sabot separation) (c) External Ballistics (d) Terminal Ballistics. ZN has developed a capability to simulate all the four phases and has validated the data against experiments. Video shows the external flight of the FSAPDS and it flight trajectory.
