We love #creating innovations, not by intruding into a #craft but adding, • Where the artisans work ends, our thinking begins, and that's how we genuinely practice co-create, • And one such innovations we did recently with tholu bommalata, a diminishing #craft? • Today most of the artisans who were making puppetry, have to leave their work in absence of demand, and the reasons is 'change in #narrative #tools' • #Mobile #Technology has completely taken over, making their narrative tool completely obsolete • So, instead of making the #puppetry now, these #artisans have shifted to making #products such as lamps, coasters, trays, etc • When our team started to #research, we realized it is not justified that we change their form or narrative art to something else, • As we believe Craft is not just a skill or motif, but evolution of sensibilities from a region • There were many other issues too, due to diversification, loads of quality issues, especially, puppets due to the large size used to bend, and same happens with happen with lamps, • The #artisans were translating a dynamic form into static and losing the essence of whole crafts, • So when we begin the '#design intervention' we had to really think hard, and ideate • How and what do we do, so that it doesn't destroy the essence of a craft, yet be #innovative • Tholu was all about local deities, Ramayan, and hence the puppets will be of Lord Ram Laxman, Sita Ji, Ravana, Hanumanji, etc, • Most of them are presented as warriors, so how do we retain • 1. Same forms • 2. Same dynamics of motion • 3. Narratives • 4. Play of Light and Shadow • 5. Multiple Characters • 6. Bamboo Sticks • Finally, we came up with an innovative #chess set that had all the above aspects, • The puppets have two-way motion, and threads (which could hurt hands) have been removed with sophisticated motion tool • In the whole #design process the important part was to ensure, without changing anything can we still get an innovative product? • And here we present the first ever Tholu #chess set to the world. • You can order now at www.indiacraftweekshop.com
