The Karla Caves is complex of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves at Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra. Just 11 Kmtrs. away from Lonavala. The Karla cave complex is built into a rocky hillside with large windows cut into the rock to light the cave interiors. Karla Caves were constructed between the 2nd century AD and the 5th century AD. The cave comprises of total of 16 rocks cut excavations. These known Buddhist rock-cut caves have one of the largest Chaityagrihas (prayer hall with a stupa inside) in India, known for its architectural style. It is said that the monks decided to build their shrine here because Karla was a natural cave, and was therefore ideal for excavation. Chaitya cave - Prayer hall - The hall features sculptures of both males and females, as well as animals such as lions and elephants. • To reach Karla Caves need to walk around 350 steps from parking area. And need to take the Tickets to go inside the caves. Cave open daily for visitors. around 9:00am and close 6:00pm. Best time to visit the Karla caves is between June - January.
