Here's the story behind the Phaistos Disc, a 4000 year old archaeological mystery. • In 1908, Luigi Pernier, an archaeologist from Italy, discovered a small golden – hued disc when carrying out excavations on the site of the Palace of Phaistos located on the south coast of Crete. Called the Phaistos Disc, it is dated back to around 1700 BC and contains 45 different symbols spiralled on both sides. The symbols on the disc are unlike any written system known. The meaning of the symbols have been debated widely by archaeologists, language experts and researchers.
