Short tutorial demonstrating how to use the Vocoder on the Boss RC-202 and RC-505 Loop Station. • A vocoder needs a modulator and a carrier. Typically the modulator is your voice. On the Loop Station, it's your input for the Input FX or a loop for the Track FX. You have a choice. • The carrier is the musical part of a vocoder. What notes it plays. In the case of the Loop Station, it needs to be recorded as audio onto one of the tracks. • You typically want the carrier part to have a lot of sustain, because silent portions will cause your vocoder to not make any sound. (Even if you are talking.) • A sound with a lot of upper harmonics or noise can be good too. It's not entirely necessary, but it can make the words sound clearer. Think Sawtooth or Square waves, or something with distortion. Even adding a bit of noise or ring modulation. • Once you have recorded your carrier sound as a loop, you need to go into the Loop Station vocoder settings and tell it which track number to use as a carrier. • On the RC-202, the carrier setting is listed as CAr . The RC-505 menu is more descriptive, so it just calls that setting Carrier. • Now when your modulator makes sound, it will let through the sound (notes) of your carrier. And it will filter what that result sounds like with your modulator. (Using a bunch of band pass filters.) Typically this is used for words, but you can run any sound through a vocoder. • If you don't want the original carrier to make any dry sound, just turn that track volume down. But the carrier track does need to be playing, or the vocoder won't have anything to modulate. • The big knob for the Loop Station's Vocoder FX controls the mix between your modulator and the vocoder. If you are using it for vocals, all the way down will be just your straight vocals. As you move it to the other side, it will mix over to full vocoder. • Electribe Live Music, a Lo-Fi Dub Synthpop album made with hardware synthesizers and effects pedals - • Electribe Live Music • #LoopStation #rc505 #rc202 #LoopStationTutorial #DreamlessElectronic
