It is said that he was initiated to the secrets of the eighteen ways of wielding the Tachi (long sword) by Hayashizaki Shinsuke’s uncle. Shinsuke was himself famous for having started a great Iaijutsu renewal. • At the end of the Sengoku period, on the New Year of the 5th year of the Bunroku era (1596), he prayed at the Atago sanctuary in Kyōto and had a revelation within a dream in which he also dreamt of the Chinese character “Kan”. He then named his school Ikkan Ryū, but it was generally known as Katayama Hōki Ryū.
