Like the biceps muscles, the diaphragm contracts like any other muscle. When it contracts the dome-shaped muscle flattens and drops into the abdomen like a piston in a cylinder head (engine) -- this with co-contraction of back, abdominal wall, and pelvic floor muscles working together (in concert) create the abdominal canister.
