The Virasat Art and Heritage Festival 2004, running from November 15 to November 26, provides a platform for people to experience the richness of art, culture, and music from renowned masters of classical music and dance. • 'Chakravyuh'- Environmental Theatre of The Hills • Chakravyuh is a folk theatre form of Garhwal. It is a kind of mass-theatre, which involves a mind-boggling cast of about 100 characters, musicians, directors, and backstage workers. It is also a form which Richard Schechner calls 'environmental theatre', a theatre performed in an open arena by not creating a space but by using a 'found space'. It is also called 'Ritual Theatre' or religio-folk theatre as the method of performance willy-nilly falls back into ritual and the characters performing as oracles of the ritual part of Pandava performance also participate in the theatre performance. • Chakravyuh enacts a universally known episode from Mahabharat in which Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna was treacherously slain by seven Kauravas in a circular fortification. The episode evokes primordial tragic pathos among the audience. Pandavani is a ritual tradition. It includes a daily pooja shastrik and folk, elaborate dances twice a day, and a cycle of folk plays interspersed with the sequence of dance and ritual. Pandava ritual is held in every valley of the region, albeit the intensity and structure varies. For thousands of years Chakravyuh has been performed in village squares. Chakravyuh in its original form, as it would have been performed several years ago, was revived through workshops and advocacy by REACH taking care to maintain the folk elements. • • #chakravyuh #festival #music #virasat #dehradun #Virasat2023 #uttarakhandtourism #uttarakhand
