It was written and first released by Mongo Santamaria on his 1963 (see 1963 in music) album Watermelon Man. Lyrics were written for the instrumental shortly thereafter by Jon Hendricks of the vocal group Lambert, Hendricks Ross. This version of the song was taken to the top of the U.K. charts in January 1965 by Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, breaking The Beatles' long-term hold on the number one spot. • Other notable covers include that by pop/rock duo They Might Be Giants on their 2001 (see 2001 in music) Mink Car album. Matt Bianco have also covered this song.
