Eiheiji, or The Temple of Eternal Peace, is one of the two head temples of Soto Zen, nestled in the mountains near Fukui City. Founded in 1244 by Zen Master Dōgen, who received land and support from his devoted follower, the samurai Yoshishige Hatano, it became a centre for training in Zen practice as a way of life.
