The paranasal sinuses form a cavernous system in our skull, around the nose. You differentiate between maxillary sinus, frontal sinus, sphenoid sinus and the ethmoidal cells. Often the Latin term is used (sinus maxillaris, sinus ethmoidalis, sinus sphenoidalis, sinus frontalis). Sinus means cave . The paranasal sinuses, the maxillary sinus to be exact, is located close beside the teeth and thus dental diseases can spread to the maxillary sinus and then to the residual sinuses. This is called a Sinusitis. Furthermore, maxillary sinusitis might lead to increased dental sensitivity.
