DEAR CVP's! • A DEADLY AVIAN DISEASE IS ON THE RISE! NO CURE FOR NEWCASTLE VIRUS! • https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/Animal_... • A DEADLY avian disease has been reported in Belgium, but what is Newcastle disease virus? Can humans catch it? Two cases of the deadly avian disease Newcastle disease virus (NDV) have been reported in Belgium according to Northern Ireland’s Department of Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). • Two commercial poultry premises in the East Flanders region of Belgium have been found to be infected by the disease AND IT'S NOW IN THE USA! • The highly infectious disease can cause catastrophic consequences in poultry. There is no known cure for Newcastle disease, which had devastating results in Northern Ireland in 1997. • What is Newcastle disease virus? • The disease was first discovered in Java, Indonesia in 1926 and in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England in 1927. • It was the case in Newcastle upon Tyne that gave the disease its name. • There may have been some instances as early as 1898 when reports state domestic fowl in northwest Scotland were wiped out. Poultry is highly susceptible to this deadly disease, which is a variant of the avian paramyxovirus 1 (APMV-1). • Transmission occurs when there is exposure to contaminated water, food, equipment and clothing as well as faecal matter and other excretions from infected birds. • This particular disease is highly virulent, which means it causes significant damage to the infected being. • Infected birds have severe nervous and respiratory problems, and spreads rapidly with a 90 percent chance of mortality. Symptoms in birds include gasping, coughing, muscular tremors, drooping wings, paralysis, swollen eyes or neck, misshapen eggs and reduced egg production. • In order to prevent the spread of the disease, new birds must be vaccinated before being introduced to a flock and any bird exhibiting symptoms must be isolated. • Can humans catch Newcastle disease? • The disease is highly contagious and can be caught by humans from infected birds or contaminated items. The symptoms of Newcastle disease virus in humans are mild flu-like symptoms. • It can also cause conjunctivitis (reddening, irritation and discharge from the eyes) and laryngitis (irritation and swelling of the voice box and surrounding area). • However, the rapidity with which the cells replicate has also lead to its interest in cancer therapy - where the NDV cells are used to kill human tumour cells. • Bird keepers are being warned by DAERA that “even if they only keep one bird, to maintain high biosecurity standards and to remain vigilant for any signs of disease in their flock.” • • Here's the link to that products, toys and food that I use and highly recommend to you all.
