Two sources of waves shown as black dots (for example, two pebbles thrown into a pond) create ripples that interfere with each other and form a criss-crossing pattern. The resulting pattern is also called a diffraction pattern. Interference or diffraction patterns occur in specific circumstances when waves form a superposition. So, interference and diffraction patterns are a subset of waves in superposition.
