Shakespeare in Yosemite performed A Midsummer Yosemite's Dream over Earth Day weekend 2024, and this recording captures the Saturday evening performance. Around 800 live spectators saw the show in Yosemite's Curry Village and on the campus of UC Merced. • This musical adaptation is set in Yosemite and takes as its starting point the archival discovery that director Max Reinhardt declined an invitation to stage Dream in front of Yosemite falls in 1934. Ninety years later, our musical adaptation imagines a collision of 1930s fairies with 2024 Ranger Mechanicals and lover-tourists, and is full of humor, heart, and calls to live in ecological balance with our home planet. • 0:00 Opening credits • 2:24 Prologue: Introduction to Yosemite in 1934 • 6:03 2.1 Part 1: Fairies in Mariposa Grove, 1934 • 10:15 Welcome to now! • 11:27 1.1: Lovers at the Ahwahnee Hotel, 2024 • 18:41 1.2: Park Mechanicals in Curry Village • 23:51 2.1 Part 2: Fairies in Mariposa Grove • 35:21 2.2: Magical Spells and Confusion • 46:06 3.1: Park Mechanicals Rehearse and Oberon Meets and Ass • 55:50 3.2: Lovers and Fairies Gone Crazy • 1:10:45 4.1: Awakenings • 1:22:25 4.2 Park Mechanicals Find Bottom • 1:23:49 5.1 A Wedding at the Ahwahnee Hotel and Pyramus and Thisbe • 1:37:16 Turn the World Around! • On Stage • Lovers and a father: • Hippolyta: Sabreena Niles [UC Merced grad student] • Theseus: Adam Washiyama Shulman • Egeus/Narrator: German Pariagua [UC Merced alum and employee] • Hermia: Madelyn Lara [UC Merced alum] • Lysander: Mia Hinshaw [UC Merced student] • Helena: Alyssa McCabe • Demetrius: Joey Serrano [UC Merced student] • Fairies: • Titania: Sofia Andom [UC Merced alum] • Oberon: Tonatiuh Newbold [Yosemite Hospitality employee and former UC Merced student] • Puck: Marcy Poe [UC Merced alum] • Ariel: Rosalee Brumbaugh • Western Pipistrelle (bat): Sal Lopez [UC Merced alum] • RedLeggedFrog: Nicole Agpuon [UC Merced student] • Monkeyflower: Mickey Clark [UC Merced student] • Parnassian (butterfly): Joanna Lopez [UC Merced student] • Juniper: Hayden Namgostar [UC Merced student] • Pika: Sam Brown [UC Merced student] • Lupine: Cat Flores [UC Merced alum] • Park Mechanicals: • Bottom, the Telecommunications Clerk/Narrator: Ranger Marion Roubal [NPS employee] • Peter Quince, the Archeologist: Ranger Eid Broughton [NPS employee] • Flute, the UC Merced Scientist: Dave Ardell [UC Merced faculty] • Snout, the Shuttle Driver: Aliya Hunter [Yosemite Hospitality Employee] • Starveling, the Campground Ranger: Ranger Jessie Levitt [NPS employee] • Snug, the Mountaineering School Administrator: Gisel Diaz [Yosemite Hospitality Employee] • As themselves: Astrid Ardell, Ranger Scott Gediman [NPS employee] • The Band: • Guitar, Piano, bandleader: David Rose • French horn, clarinet, ukelele: BJ Humpal • Drums: Ranger Dave Brumbagh [NPS employee] • Clarinet, Bass: Jackson Mitchell • Saxophone, Bass, French Horn: Diego Flores • Flute: Aahana Garcha • Behind the scenes: • Director, Adaptor, and Producer: Katie Brokaw [UC Merced faculty] • Music Director and Associate Director: Tonatiuh Newbold [Yosemite Hospitality] • Associate Producer and NPS liaison: Scott Gediman [NPS] • Associate Producer: Collin Lewis [UC Merced executive arts director] • Associate Directors: Ranger Marion Roubal and Sedney Suarez Gordon [UC Merced graduate student] • Stage Manager: Wayne Agbanlog [UC Merced student] • NPS consultant, set construction, and Yosemite rehearsal assistant: Ranger Steve Lyon [NPS] • PR: Jennyfer Aguirre and Srikar Gudipati [UC Merced students] • Dramaturgs and Archivists: Ranger Sam Goza [NPS employee] and Tierney Bowden [UC Merced student] • Lead Costume and Prop Designers: Grace Garnica and Mahea LaRosa [UC Merced alumni and staff] • Set Designer: Adam Washiyama Shulman • Design Team: Marline Acosta, Miranda Cruz, Diana Gonzalez Hernandez, Alan Molina, Emily Pu, and Rachelle Tseng [UC Merced students] • Choreograpphers: Ranger Marion Rouba [NPS] and Sal Lopez, Mia Hinshaw [UC Merced] • Sound engineer and film editing: Will Darpinian [UC Merced alum] • Videography, photography, and film editing: Will Serg George [UC Merced alum] • Photography: Amir Shirzadibonab [UC Merced grad student] • Guest researcher: Elizabeth Freestone • Shakespeare in Yosemite is a partnership between University of California Merced, Yosemite National Park, and Yosemite Hospitality, with sponsorship support from Visit Yosemite Madera County, Yosemite Mariposa County Tourism Bureau, Misfit Inc, and private donations. • We acknowledge the Yokut and and Miwuk peoples as the traditional caretakers of the lands now occupied by UC Merced, and the associated tribes of Yosemite--the Bishop Paiute Tribe, the Bridgeport Indian Colony, the Mono Lake Kutzadika Tribe, North Forth Rancheria of Mono Indians, Picayune Rancheria of Chukansi Indians, Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation, and the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians—who have for thousands of years stewarded what is now known as Yosemite National Park. • Find Shakespeare in Yosemite on Instagram and TikTok @yosemiteshakes • More at Yosemiteshakes.ucmerced.edu
