Today we are going to look at Echeveria varieties and how to care for these wonderful succulents. Watering, growing medium or soil and also lighting conditions for optimal growth and foliage colour. • Echeveria are are a large genus of succulent plants most are evergreen some are deciduous. With over 40 species and countless hybrids the variety in foliage and form is huge. • • Watering is a major issue, firstly you need to water the soil or growing medium rather than the foliage. Rainwater is best as it does not have minerals and chemicals that will mark the bloom on the foliage. • Watering is increased in summer and decreased in winter. The growing medium needs to dry almost completely between watering and this can be tested with your finger. • Growing medium needs to be free draining, a simple cactus and succulent potting mix is suited to most varieties. • Sun is another issue, the amount of sun Echeveria require depends on your climate as well as the variety. As a general rule, those with paler foliage will take less sun. In hotter climates, Echeveria can suffer from leaf burn in very hot summer afternoon sun, so some protection may be required. • The amount of sun also affects foliage colour, more sun will bring out better colours, as will a little less watering. • Conversely to much shade can lead to elongation of the leaves. • • Species such as echeveria agavoides and echeveria peacockii are popular, however it is the hybrids that are most commonly offered for sale. • Before we look at potting techniques, we will look at a few Echeveria varieties from James Lucas at Succulents Australia • Most varieties grow well in shallow bowls, if you wish to use a deeper container, try using some polystyrene in the bottom of the container to lessen the amount of potting mix and the weight of the container. • Key Moments • 00:00 Echeveria Varieties and General Care • 00:29 How to Water Echeveria • 01:00 Popular Echeveria • 00:10 Light and Sun • 02:00 Potting Soil/Growing Medium • 02:26 Rock Toppings for Echeveria • More Information • https://www.nurseriesonline.com.au/pl...
