In this video we’re going to compare Kawai’s ES8 against Roland’s FP-90 all-in-one portable digital piano. Both instruments are considered leaders in the segment, and are flagship portable units of their respective manufacturers. • We’ll compare actions, tone engines, features, accessories, and playing impressions in the video - we hope you enjoy it, and if it’s the first time to the channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate it! • • Action: • The ES8 uses Kawai’s RH3 action, which they’ve utilized across most of their mid to upper-mid range digital pianos like the CN29, CN39, and MP7SE. It has a triple sensor that’s highly regarded as one of the most accurate in the industry for midi output, and a physical design which simulates the dynamic resistance of an acoustic well, with a realistic key-bed feel as well (i.e. there’s some give to it, just like an acoustic key hitting the felt punching under its front rail). • The action on the FP90 is a slightly heavier and - in theory - slightly more realistic in terms of its behavior in motion (with wood elements). It’s equipped with a triple sensor and far less of a hard ‘thump’ at the bottom of the key stroke compared with the PHA-4 action on the other FP series. The Roland action has more texture on it than the Kawai, but in terms of accuracy, I find the Kawai gives a wider dynamic output, although it’s hard to tell whether that’s more in the touch-curves and tone-generator compression than the action itself. • • Sound: • The ES8 and FP90 have extremely different tone generators, and the piano sounds behave as such. The ES8 was one of the first instruments to receive the single-key, multidimensional sample set based on the SK-EX concert grand, and the tone is lush, highly dynamic, and scary realistic. • One of the most innovative features of the ES8 is the isolated speaker boxes that have been built with air-ports on the bottom for better airflow and improved bass response. At 30 Watts of power, the ES8 manages to produce as much or more tone than other instruments with 10-15 Watts MORE. • The FP90 on the other hand uses a modelling engine for it’s piano sounds, something of a first for a digital piano of this type, and adds an insane level of control over the sonic experience...the debate is still raging as to whether all of that control and algorithmic complexity actually produces a better sound than a great sample, but there are plenty of arguments in support of modelling. • • Connectivity / Features: • The ES8 is software / app compatible through a USB connection, much like Yamaha’s lineup requires. It also has separate audio outputs and a speaker switch so that you can turn the speaker on or off to your liking, rather than only being able to defeat it by inserting something into the headphone jacks. • Both instruments come with available full stands and triple pedal units for about $400 extra - a spend well worth it if it’s going to sit in one place. • The FP90 does have the Bluetooth MIDI and Audio functions, which is extremely handy, as well as the USB recording (midi / audio), intelligent accompaniment (onboard and through Piano Partner 2) microphone input and basic effecting, and over 300 sounds. • Generally speaking, the FP90 out-spec’s the ES8 in a few different ways, and on paper should be the stronger contender. It’s more expensive as well, so Roland is asking you to pay for those upgrades. However, for a playing experience...something always difficult to measure specifically...the ES8 is more than a worthy consideration. • Connect with Merriam Music: • â—Ź Website â–¸ https://www.merriammusic.com/ • â—Ź Contact Us â–¸ https://www.merriammusic.com/contact/ • â—Ź Instagram â–¸   / merriammusic   • â—Ź Facebook â–¸   / merriammusic   • â—Ź Twitter â–¸   / merriammusicinc
