Here's a video of me getting a maxed out score of 999999 points in the original Game Boy Tetris from 1989. The goal was to get the max out as fast as possible (which means taking the risk to get some Triples and Tetrises on level 20), not to clear as many lines as possible. I've got also a video where I cleared 1000 lines (Heart Mode maxout):    • GameBoy Tetris 1000 lines + 999,999 p...   • Scoring system: • Single: 40 points • Double: 100 points (50 points per line) • Triple: 300 points (100 points per line) • Tetris: 1200 points (300 points per line) • line clear points are multiplied by (current level + 1) • (that means times 10 on level 9, times 21 on level 20) • softdrop points are negligible (since they are independent of level) • timestamps: • 00:05 building a GB Tetris pattern/art • (with a predetermined bag-randomizer sequence) • 01:20 starting an A-Type level 9 game • 03:20 a spin with an S piece (doesn't work in the mirrored field) • 07:13 reaching level 10, now falling speed/gravity becomes higher • 08:30 a spin with a Z piece (doesn't work in the mirrored field) • 12:48 reaching level 20, gravity stays constant from now on • 13:00 1st Tetris on level 20 • 13:37 2nd Tetris on level 20, so leet • 14:54 3rd Tetris on level 20 • 16:20 4th Tetris on level 20, lucky • 18:10 5th Tetris on level 20, lucky again • 19:17 6th Tetris on level 20 • 24:10 perfect clear! (empty board) • 25:35 very lucky 7th Tetris on level 20 makes for 999.999 points • (kinda suicidal but I wanted to finish the game with a Tetris) • 25:52 big missile (as a reward for surpassing 200,000 points) • 26:58 B-Type level 9 high 5 (clear 25 lines with some initial garbage) • 28:26 Russian dancers and Buran shuttle • About my GameBoy Tetris journey: • As a kid my highscore was 609k points. I was using my thumbs and level 20 was my nemesis. I had never cleared more than 40 lines in level 20. After some years, my GameBoy's directional pad wasn't that responsive anymore (it became too stiff), and I couldn't reach that score anymore. In 2013, I bought a new GameBoy (the one in the video). I saw other people using their index and middle fingers, so I started playing that way. I got to around 730k points in 2 weeks. Then, I started crossing my hands (like in the video), using my right hand for D-pad and my left hand for buttons A and B. Basically, with that method I use the same fingers (for move left/right and rotate) as when playing Tetris on a computer. This also made me tap the D-pad a little faster (tapping is very important because autorepeat speed is too slow in GB Tetris), especially in the right direction (path to the right side is longer than to the left). From that moment I knew I would reach the 999,999 points in no time. And indeed, 3 weeks later I got my first max-out. By now, I would say that I could max out every 4th or 5th game when I went for Singles on level 20. • I would estimate that around 1000 people have maxed out GameBoy Tetris, with the first max-outs in 1989 or 1990. Also note that an earlier version was released in Japan (but only 10,000 or less copies of said version), using a different level progression system which theoretically allows to get 999,999 points before reaching level 20 (when starting in level 0, level 20 will come after 310 lines). • Note that there's another original Game Boy Tetris max-out on Youtube by Spectre/DanZ. If I understood it correctly, he connected his GameBoy (Advance?) to a GameCube for the video output. edit: or maybe with a Super Gameboy playing on a SNES controller. •    • Game Boy Tetris - 999,999 points   • Since there were some doubters (there's only screen footage, no fingers or whatever), Spectre/DanZ made a B-Type level 19 (via Heart Mode) high 5 video. That's harder to achieve than a max-out. I never really bothered to play level 19 high 5 B-Type because I dislike challenges were the first few seconds matter the most (which means you have to restart over and over again until you get a lucky start) •    • Gameboy Tetris - Level 9 Heart Height 5   • If you're looking for a rudimentary GameBoy highscore thread than head over to the HardDrop Tetris community. Post a photo of your score and it will be added to the leaderboard. • http://harddrop.com/forums/index.php?... • That's sadly the best highscore list you can find in the interwebs. I always found it weird that there's no real leaderboard for a rather competitive game with 30 millions physical copies. Twin Galaxies also has a leaderboard, but the official scores there are much worse because of certain restrictions. For a long time they only accepted video tapes (no digital videos). If I understood correctly, only people from English speaking countries (unlike me) are allowed there and people have to pay a fee to get their scores on the list. edit: I was told that most contra Twin Galaxy points are not true (anymore).
