The first full-scale working railway steam locomotive was built in the UK in 1804 by Richard Trevithick, a British engineer from Cornwall. It used high-pressure steam for power and had a flywheel to balance the piston rod action. The world's first steam-powered railway journey happened on 21 February 1804 with Trevithick's locomotive at the Penydarren ironworks in South Wales. Matthew Murray's Salamanca in 1812 was the first commercially successful steam locomotive, using a cog-wheel for traction on the Middleton Railway in Leeds. Puffing Billy in 1813 by Blackett and Hedley was the first successful adhesion-only locomotive for the Wylam Colliery Railway. 🛤️🚂 • George Stephenson, influenced by Trevithick, Murray, and Hedley's early locomotives, convinced the Killingworth colliery manager to let him build a steam machine in 1814. He played a crucial role in enhancing and popularizing steam locomotives, surpassing the earlier innovators' work. Stephenson's locomotive Blücher, with flanged-wheel adhesion, was successful. In 1825, he created Locomotion for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first public steam railway, using both horse and steam power initially. His Rocket, built in 1829, won the Rainhill Trials, leading to his company becoming a top steam locomotive builder in Britain, Ireland, the US, and Europe. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830 was the first public railway solely using steam locomotives. Steam power remained the primary railway power system globally for over a century. ⏳🚂 • What do you think 🤔 about this??
