We can use addition or subtraction to describe a pattern or create a sequence with fractions. To describe a pattern, we write the terms as equivalent fractions with a common denominator. Then we find the difference between consecutive terms and write a rule to extend the sequence. A pattern is an ordered set of numbers or objects; the order will help us predict what will come next. A sequence is an ordered list of numbers. A term is a number in a sequence. Consecutive means following one right after another. We can create a sequence if we're given a starting term in a rule. We can use the rule to fill in missing terms of a sequence. We must first write the fractions as equivalent with common denominators, so we can use subtraction to find the difference between the terms. The difference between each term will help us identify the rule. To make sure we have the correct rule, we need to compare all of the terms in the sequence. If the terms of the sequence are increasing, we cannot assume that the rule involves addition because the terms may increase if the rule involves multiplication. If the terms of the sequence are decreasing, we cannot assume that the rule involves subtraction because the terms may decrease if the rule involves division. We solve one word problem that involves patterns with fractions. We find missing terms of sequences. We're given a start term and a rule and we complete a sequence using this information. • 5th Grade Math 3.10, Patterns with Decimals, Sequence Terms of a Pattern • • 5th Grade Math 3.10, Patterns with De... • 5th Grade Math 6.1, Model Addition with Unlike Denominators • • 5th Grade Math 6.1, Model Addition wi... • 5th Grade Math 6.2, Model Subtraction with Unlike Denominators • • 5th Grade Math 6.2, Model Subtraction... • 5th Grade Math 6.3, Estimate Fraction Sums Differences • • 5th Grade Math 6.3, Estimate Fraction... • 5th Grade Math 6.4, Common Denominators Equivalent Fractions • • 5th Grade Math 6.4, Common Denominato... • 5th Grade Math 6.5, Add Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators • • 5th Grade Math 6.5, Add Subtract Fr... • 5th Grade Math 6.6, Add Subtract Mixed Numbers with Unlike Denominators • • 5th Grade Math 6.6, Add Subtract Mi... • 5th Grade Math 6.7, Subtract Mixed Numbers with Renaming • • 5th Grade Math 6.7, Subtract Mixed Nu... • 5th Grade Math Playlist • • 5th Grade Math Course • I'm using the Houghton Mifflin Go Math! • 2015 copyright textbook for this playlist. • You can practice online using the textbook's website • https://www.gomathacademy.com/ • YouTube rating for JoAnn's School videos: • L0 - No strong language • N0 - No nudity • S0 - No sexual situations • V0 - Not violent or disturbing • D0 - No drug reference or content • F0 - No flashing lights content • FOLLOW ME: • SUBSCRIBE on YouTube / joannsschool • TWITTER / joannsschool • FACEBOOK / joannsschool • MINDS https://www.Minds.com/joannsschool • PATREON / joannsschool • SUPPORT MY WORK: • PATREON (one time or monthly) / joannsschool • PAYPAL (one time) https://www.paypal.me/JoAnnsSchool
