Back trimming today, finishing a few forms thrown last week now that’s they’re firm enough. This stoneware is made for reduction firing, or at least, that’s when you get the most out of it. Fired in oxidation it’s a cool-grey colour with very little surface interest, but in reduction it’s dotted with metal and it flashes, turning a sort of orange-red. That’s why it’s so red at this stage, it isn’t terracotta, it just contains a lot of red iron oxide. • This surface colour can be ground back through, which is why I don’t sand the bases of my pots too much after they’ve been glaze fired, as essentially, I’d be removing a quality the kiln gives to the pots and there’s absolutely no getting it back. • I haven’t made this particular shape with a stepped lid before, but after a few successful pots with lids like this I want to begin scaling the idea up. • Now to figure out which glaze to use for this piece. • #pottery #vase #handmade #trimming #oddlysatisfying #craftsmanship
