• Angel - Sarah McLachlan Cover • ‘Angel’ is a song by Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan. It appears on her fourth studio album Surfacing in 1997 and released as a single in 1998. ‘Angel’ was Sarah’s second consecutive top-five hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number four. It also spent 12 weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary chart placing as the number-one song on that chart for 1999. The song has charted in several countries in the years following its release, reaching number seven in Ireland in 2002 and number nine in Norway in 2008. • Sarah wrote this song about a drug addict’s struggle with the world namely Jonathan Melvoin, the Smashing Pumpkin’s touring keyboard player who overdosed on heroin and died in 1996. She did not know him personally and was never a heavy drug user herself but when she read about his death in ‘Rolling Stone’ she felt a connection as she had just come off two years on the road where “there’s nothing constant but everything becomes the same.” • This was used in the 1998 movie ‘City of Angels.’ • The song has had an enduring popularity and has been used in a number of different ways. Sarah has stated and I quote “I think once an artist puts a song out there, it becomes open to interpretation, and I purposefully leave a certain amount of ambiguity in songs so that people can relate the songs to themselves and their own stories.” • “And as for me, it’s a great validation as an artist to know that something I have created has gone out there in the world and helped people to heal, or to feel something, in a profound way like that.”
