Alfred Brendel counted Morgen- stern among his favorite poets. The Russian-American composer Lera Auerbach read this in an interview with the pianist, then obtained a copy of the book and was immediately enthralled by Morgenstern's whimsical, witty, ambiguous poetry. And the idea was born to set some of the Galgenlieder to music, as Sofia Gubaidulina, among others, had done several years earlier. Auerbach decided on the instrumentation of saxophone quartet and women's choir. She finished the piece in 2013 - she created another version for children's choir two years later - and it was premiered on May 25, 2013, at Cologne's Trinitatis Church by the Raschér Quartet and the women of the WDR Radio Choir. In a prefatory note to the score, Lera Auerbach, who is also very active as a pianist, poet, and artist, writes: In interpreting the performance instructions, it is certainly advisable to exaggerate. A successful performance of the work must be very free, dark, and humorous, rendering a great variety of colors and nuances. Each phrase must be sung or played with clear emotional and tonal intention. A creative and risk-taking attitude is inevitable for the performance of this work. The listener can be surprised, delighted or annoyed, but in no case should he be bored. (Text: Stefan Fricke)
