Fokker´s Brushed Cowlings 1 Why

Just like the Fokker streaky camouflage paint, the brushed aluminum poses considerable difficulties for many rebuilders and modelers alike. But even this is neither complicated nor does it require a degree. • The first sheet metal fairings were manufactured and supplied for Fokker by the Kruck company in Wiesbaden for its M.1 as early as 1912. These were also purchased from Kruck until 1913 and used until the M.3. Kruck only supplied painted bodies. • From the M.4 onwards, Fokker manufactured its own sheet metal and dispensed with a coat of paint. Since pure aluminum was used for all cowlings, it was almost impossible to avoid scratching the sheet metal on the workbench. As this looks unattractive, all visible sides of the sheet metal were roughened with rotating wirebrushes at Fokker. This deliberate scratching was visually attractive and reduced glare. It is not true that the brushing served to provide a base for paint coats. At least this was not the original reason, as all pre-war aircraft were wire brushed and sheet metal used in the interior was also treated in this way, for which a coat of paint was never intended. It goes without saying that brushing keeps the paint better, of course, too. • CHEERS • • Now you know that too. • • Are you interested in early aviation and fighter planes of the First World War? • Then don't miss our other posts.
