Both the book and the film have parallels to real-life events that took place in 1959 concerning Discoverer 2, a missing experimental US satellite capsule that inadvertently landed in the Arctic Ocean near Norway. It was believed to have been recovered by Soviet agents. While the film offers intrigue, suspense, and action, it also highlights the psychological toll, treacherous conditions, and logistical challenges faced by military personnel operating in the harsh Arctic environment. • Director Sturges, who had benefited greatly from the rousing scores Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004) penned for his films 'The Magnificent Seven (1960) and 'The Great Escape (1963), this time selected French composer Michel Legrand to score this film. Though he may not have been a household name outside of his native France, the composer, arranger, conductor, and jazz pianist had already been writing music for films and television since 1957, but virtually his entire output had been for French, Italian or the occasional low-profile British production. His score for 'Ice Station Zebra is at once epic yet also offbeat, with powerful main themes dressed in an intricate web of mystery and suspense. The film is first and foremost a military story, but in Legrand's hands it becomes almost like a Cold War ballet, with a polished, artistic sheen to its danger. Legrand himself provided the terrific orchestrations and conducted the seventy-five-piece orchestra. Steeped in music from a young age, Legrand, who had written over two-hundred film and television scores, in addition to numerous songs in a career that spanned more than sixty years, had collaborated onstage, onscreen and in the studio with dozens of celebrated musicians of his era. As a Master of Jazz based scores, he brought a rare sophistication to such soundtracks as 'The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), yet, as his popular score for 'The Three Musketeers (1973) shows, he could also deliver a rousing, witty and inventive large scale orchestral score with the best of them. Legrand's prolific work rate and prodigious talent ensures that he left behind a vast amount of music to discover following his death. • This video is for promotional use only.
