Refugee in Canada From Far and Wide Wilderness welcome

Raquel De Queiroz felt a desperate pull to help after the photo of Alan Kurdi shocked the world. But she wasn’t sure how her community of Whitehorse, far north of areas where other Syrians would soon arrive, could help. She created an event on Facebook for anyone interested in sponsoring a family. She hoped a dozen or so would show up. At the first meeting, more than 100 people arrived to show their support- organizers couldn’t fit everyone into the library. The fledgling group quickly raised enough to sponsor a family. They decided that since they had the resources, they would take on a large family- Hussein and Fatima Arafat and their 9 children arrived last winter. • Upon arrival, the family made it clear education was one of their highest priorities in Canada. All of the younger children are back in school and the older ones are working towards college, despite missing out on years of education.
