The seamless merging of two different designs that incorporates new building technologies in the late 19th century can be seen in the Monadnock Building. Architects Burnham Root designed the north half of the building in 1891 with architects Holabird Roche designing the south half of the building in 1893. The north half of the building is characterized by thick, load bearing masonry walls while the south half of the building has an interior structural metal frame allowing for thinner exterior walls and is decorated with heavy ornamentation.
