PPT design tip: One legend for multiple charts. Russ Borrelli from eSlide walks you through his tips on how to easily create a single legend from multiple charts. • • In the example slide, you will see there are two pie charts but this technique works on any chart type. It can be bar charts, line charts, combinations, etc. • • What you want to do is reduce the amount of visual clutter on the slide. You’ll see there are two legends that basically say the same thing, which is a bit redundant. What we want to do is have a single legend for both of the charts and I’ll show you how we are going to achieve that. We select one of our charts. We’re going to copy it and paste it and we’re going to move it out of the way. Then we go into the original charts and delete the legends by selecting them and hitting the delete key. We’re going to bring the new copy back up to where it’s visible, and edit the data, so we need to launch Excel, go into our spreadsheet, and change the data to zero. • • I’m going to copy and paste to save a little bit of time, and essentially once that’s done, you’ll see that the pie chart disappears, but it leaves us with a legend. I’m going to grab the handle and stretch it horizontally and you’ll see that the legend lays out in a nice single line. Now, I’m going to align that to the center of the slide and send it to the back so it’s out of the way - so I can access these two charts easily. • • I’m going to grab them, take the handles, scale them down a little bit so they’re out of the way, give us a little breathing room, and there you have the two charts with a single legend. • • I hope you watch some more of our tips and put them to use in your daily PowerPoint production.
