There are many key factors that illustrate pathological narcissism to help you identify it. In this video I will discuss one in particular and how it ' a strategy but actually a defense mechanism to keep their core content safe, and it’s called enlistment. • I will first talk about narcissism, then enlistment, then I will read some comments I received from Facebook and Instagram on the topic of how YOU spot a narcissist and what to do when you see it. • There is healthy and pathological narcissism. Healthy narcissism is the type that is based on true confidence in your ability and doesn’t take away from someone else. For example, a doctor with healthy narcissism has confidence he or she can help, that they can find what is wrong and help cure or manage what is wrong. Pathological narcissism, which we will discuss in greater depth, is a core content built of fear, doubt, shame, guilt, inferiority and others that is reinforced through the belittle, manipulating, or harming another person or persons. Let’s use the doctor example again, but this time the doctor sees what is wrong with you, communicates it in a way that you cannot understand, they use a lot of medical terminology you’ve heard of, and then imply or say outright it’s your fault, and then they tell you do this, here, without a clear and concise explanation. BTW, they never ask if you have any questions. If you do ask questions you are met with frustration, rudeness, and a sense of blame or being talked down to that makes you think, “maybe I’m just too stupid to understand what he/she is saying”. • Enlistment is a common defense mechanism used by those along the narcissistic spectrum. It is defined as Help of one or more of his/her codependent or needy friends who will support his/her distorted view. Narcissistic individuals build networks that reinforce their narcissism, and they do this through enlistment.
