He wasn’t talking about a single assignment, which would have been surprising enough. This was the semester grade, the final mark for a 10-week subject. At that time, I’d been teaching for two years. I wasn’t part of the conversation but was sitting at my desk nearby while the teacher spoke to a colleague. I carefully said, “That’s a huge jump in grades,” to which he replied, “Teachers do it all the time.” • I knew that sometimes teachers make small adjustments, like moving a 49 to a 50, or a 59 to a 60, especially if a student’s effort deserves it. But a 20% boost? Not only were his actions immoral, but they inflated the student’s and his parents’ understanding of his skills. • The following year, I was teaching the same students in Year 10. Strangely, several of the students who had received B or higher grades from those two teachers the previous year were now scoring D grades.
