Ashur was the chief deity of the ancient Assyrians in Mesopotamia (Ancient Iraq). He played a central role in the Assyrian pantheon and was particularly associated with kingship, war, and the expansion of the empire. Ashur was often depicted as bearing a bow, symbolizing his role as a warrior god. The god Ashur was initially the patron deity of the city of Ashur, one of the earliest and most important cities in Assyria. As the Assyrian Empire expanded, Ashur's importance grew, becoming the primary national god.
