While propagation of tulips can be easily done by bulb offsets, that will develop plants with the same genetics of the parent plant (they will be basically the very same plant, just spread in different bulbs, a bit like when you propagate a plant by cutting), propagation of tulips by seeds will lead to the development of new plants, with their own genetic background, individually different from the parent plants. The vast majority of these plants can be very similar and almost identical to their parents, if the seeds were the result of a cross pollination or a self pollination of the same tulip species, but if the seeds developed from cross pollination of two different tulip species or hybrids, or eve self-pollination of a hybrid, these offspring will show a range of similarities and differences in comparison to the parents, having inherited different genes affecting colour, height, fragrance from their parents, great-grandparents, and so on. Also, while tulip bulb offsets can bloom even a few months after planting, tulips from seeds usually bloom at least after 3 years from planting, but more usually between 4 and 7 years. Why then propagate tulips from seed? First of all, in case of species, to improve the genetic diversity of your stock, even if the plants within the same species look identical, they will have different resistance to pathogens and different adaptability to growing conditions, so it is always better to have a wide genetic variety in your stock. Second, only when breeding tulips from seeds, you can expect offspring showing new combinations of colours, fragrance and height, that were not present in the parent plants, so it is the only way to develop new varieties. Third, parent plants with great characteristics will have the chance of make these characteristics even stronger in their offspring. And, last but not least, it is great fun to have the possiblity maybe to create your own variety of tulip!!! In this video I show how to choose viable tulip seeds for planting.
