While serving as a member of I Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, he was wounded in action on June 18, 1944, during the assault on Mount Tapochau in the Battle of Saipan, during which most of his company were casualties. He was hit by machine gun fire, which severed his sciatic nerve, and then was hit again in the foot by a rifle round. After over a year of medical treatment in naval hospitals, Marvin was given a medical discharge with the rank of PFC. We will look at how these events shaped his life, his experiences of combat, his postwar struggles, his opposition to the Vietnam war and his war films. • Our guest today is Dwayne Epstein, author of Point Blank the authoritative and detailed story of Lee Marvin's life, career and classic films. From his chilling titular villain in “Who Shot Liberty Valance” to the paternal yet brutally realistic platoon leader in “The Big Red One. Prior to writing biographies, Epstein contributed to film chronicles on a regular basis. He wrote for Filmfax Magazine on subjects such as athlete turned actor Woody Strode, Bobby Darin, the Rat Pack, television pioneer Steve Allen, film director Sam Fuller, Kevin McCarthy, John Belushi, Clint Walker, and Sid Caesar. Epstein later contributed to Cahiers Du Cinema’s “Serious Pleasures” which had a high profile in Europe.
