This video example is property of Dr. Megan Miller. For more information about addressing barriers to learning, check out our webinar on barriers to learning titled Rediscover your Roots: Putting the analysis back in behavior analysis: https://collective.dobettermovement.u... • *This webinar is part of our member library or can be purchased individually • In this video, Megan demonstrates what typically happens with learners when they engage in discrimination errors. You will see Malerie is mixing up letters and numbers. When Malerie errors, Megan provides her with a prompt and Malerie responds correctly. After 2 prompted trials, Malerie responds independently to one of the targets. Megan then provides reinforcement for this correct response. Unfortunately, this type of training does nothing when it comes to building the skill of discrimination. Malerie can say the same answer every time and still receive reinforcement 50% of the time and/or Malerie can rely on being prompted with the right answers and then receive reinforcement. This not only doesn't teach Malerie to discriminate what she sees or hears but it also could make the barriers worse because she is still accessing reinforcement for this performance. • The rest of the videos in this series will demonstrate a sample of the procedures we have used to promote the acquisition of discrimination. • All programs should be overseen by a BCBA.
