Around that time Martinů showed his temporary inclination towards expressionism, which led to a new understanding of folklore music. This approach seems to be in absolute contradiction to that of Smetana, where the folk melodics and rhythmicity were left to work in its natural and seamless way. The Dances make a conscious effort to expand on the folk motives in a bizzare, even grotesque fashion, essentially making fun of his great predecessor, whom he held in high regard. Each of the individual dances also seems to be merged with the 'Mateník' dance form, known for its frequent tempo and time signature changes.
