Abby's 260 gallon on day 14. The uglies * have started. Besides the role live rock has in reducing the severity and duration of the growth of nuisance algae, water changes have been started using steel straws to assist the urchins added in the first week. Here's some links with more information. • My video on using steel straws: • Stainless Steel Straws (Beta) • Aquabiomics article on live rock to establish healthy microbiomes: • https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/est... • Restoring coral reefs using manual removal and urchins: • https://response.restoration.noaa.gov... • *When establishing a new reef ecosystem and after an event that causes a die off of a significant number of the corals and or fish in a reef ecosystem there is an rapid growth of unwanted or detrimental alga, cynobacteria and other microbial species. Reef aquarists generally refer to this as the uglies . There are various procedures and/or products used, but the method developed by (Lee Chin Eng in teh 50s then primarily German) aquarists back in the 80's which uses live rock works best as it allows for the immediate addition of corals and fish to promote beneficial microbiomes from the start.
