Primary spontaneous pneumothorax may occur in an apparently healthy person who has no other signs or symptoms of a disease process that may have caused the pneumothorax observation and oxygen therapy. These may be the only treatments that are necessary for patients who have small primary, spontaneous pneumothorax. However, for patients with pneumothorax and clinically significant breathlessness, active intervention is required. This may include needle aspiration or the placement of a chest tube.
