Retro Bob here, back with another rare album—or in this case, an extended play record?? That's right, the first EP I'm showcasing on this channel is the debut project from New York City-based duo Retisonic. According to a bio by Arctic Rodeo Recordings, Guitarist/singer Jason Farrell started his arc with the infamous DC hardcore bands SWIZ and FURY (both Jade Tree), followed by BLUETIP (Dischord) and SWEETBELLY FREAKDOWN (Jade Tree). Drummer Joe Gorelick upped the skill level of post-HC pre-emo (“pre-mo”) through GARDEN VARIETY (Cargo/Headhunter/Gern Blandsten) and hardcore chaos with THE 52-X before briefly joining Jason in BLUETIP. The group would add a bassist, Jim Kimball, in later releases, but only Jason and Joe are playing in this first EP. Gorelick covered drums, percussion, and back-ups while Farrell worked on vocals, guitar, bass, and graphics for this release. The CD has especially cool packaging, with an angled cut-out in the top corner of the cover, side, and back artwork, likely signifying the lean nature of this record by cutting out unnecessary space. • Apple Music describes how Hailing from the punk-pop neighborhoods of Washington D.C. [...] Both Farrell and Gorelick had spent most of the 1990s touring the world with the likes of At the Drive-In, Burning Airlines, Tool, and the International Noise Conspiracy [...] Retisonic was born in 1997 and a new spiky new wave/punk sound was crafted. Silverthree, out of the neighboring state of Virginia, inked the band a deal in 2002; a tour with Jets to Brazil coincided with the release of Retisonic's debut Lean Beat, the following spring. After releasing their debut album Return to Me through Silverthree soon after this EP, the band was sporadic with releasing music. They would go on hiatus after 2004, dropping their second EP with Arctic Rodeo Recordings in 2006 despite Farrell moving across the country to Los Angeles. The band's second and final LP to date came out in 2012, also with Arctic Rodeo. Retisonic members Jason Farrell and Joe Gorelick have since formed the band Red Hare along with former Swiz members Shawn Brown and Dave Eight, bringing the world of melodic hardcore full circle with albums released through Dischord Records in 2013 and most recently 2018. • Overall, this EP has a very cool sound created by two pioneers of this subgenre and scene that I hope you will enjoy. Let me know what genre, artist, or album you want to hear next! • Tracklist: • 1. Caught in the Light (0:00) • 2. Malaligned (2:54) • 3. Filthy Way to Lose Yourself (6:28) • 4. The Silverthree PO box probably isn't accurate anymore either. The broken links aren't surprising since Silverthree hasn't released an album since 2006 and Retisonic since 2012; however, I wanted to still include the information for the sake of preservation.}
