Eventually, technologies with this great device at their core reached the moon and beyond, finding their way into the thousands of devices that touch our lives every day. • In its most basic form, a gyroscope is a wheel or disk mounted on a gimbal so that it can rotate rapidly about an axis that is free to change direction. The angular momentum of the rotating rotor causes it to hold its position even when the assembly on which it is mounted is tilted. Gyroscopes maintain their original orientation to a fixed point in space, unaffected by Earth's rotation. • Gyroscopes help navigate a variety of vehicles, from airplanes and ships to drones and driverless cars. They stabilize and manipulate cameras, scientific instruments, and robots. It isolates sensitive equipment from vibration and guides drilling rigs for oil and gas producers. They are used in virtual reality headsets, smartphones and computer pointing devices. By pointing satellites in the right direction, they enable voice and data communications that connect our world and fuel the global economy. • Honeywell engineers are focused on making the next generation of gyroscopic products even better because no one knows where they will end up next. • Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technologies have enabled a new generation of MEMS gyroscopes designed to meet designers' demands for much smaller gyroscopes that can be mass-produced quickly and inexpensively. When the MEMS is rotated, a small mass shifts and produces a signal that can be amplified and read by a microcontroller. • Applications of gyroscopes include inertial navigation systems where magnetic compasses do not work or are not precise enough for stabilization of flying vehicles such as radio-controlled helicopters or drones, and recreational craft, commercial vessels.
