Short lecture on normalization of the wavefunction. • The wavefunctions for the particle in a box model system are the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian operator, [ psi_n(x) = B sin(n pi x / L) ]. The coefficient B is the normalization constant, which is determined by ensuring that the probability that the particle is between zero and L is 100%. To do so, we set the integral of the wavefunction times its complex conjugate over all space equal to 1. This gives a normalization constant of sqrt(2 / L). • Notes Slide: http://i.imgur.com/PPDPI0T.png • -- About TMP Chem -- • All TMP Chem content is free for everyone, everywhere, and created independently by Trent Parker. • Email: [email protected] • -- Video Links -- • Chapter Playlist: • Particle in a Box / Schrodinger Equation • Course Playlist: • Quantum Chemistry and Spectroscopy • Course Review: • Quantum Chemistry Chapter Reviews • Other Courses: • PChem Course Intros • Channel Info: • About TMP Chem • -- Social Links -- • Facebook: / tmpchem • Twitter: / tmpchem • LinkedIn: / tmpchem • Imgur: https://tmpchem.imgur.com • GitHub: https://www.github.com/tmpchem • -- Equipment -- • Microphone: Blue Yeti USB Microphone • Drawing Tablet: Wacom Intuos Pen and Touch Small • Drawing Program: Autodesk Sketchbook Express • Screen Capture: Corel Visual Studio Pro X8
