While the most formidable rival to Christianity through the second and third centuries was Gnosticism, its precursor comprised its first substantial theological challenge. Called “Docetism,” its roots were planted in pre-Christian thought and practice, since it dealt with questions regarding the origin of evil apart from the initial Jewish apocalyptic framework of the church. This provided an ardent impetus for the sect, because such issues were not formally addressed in the gospels and epistles.
