The Vedas are, of course, the highest authority. However, Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is like the essence of the Vedic teachings, written by Ved Vyas himself. Knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads is presented in such a blissful manner, with all the Divine pastimes of God and His devotees, that listening to the Bhagwat Katha becomes an experience in itself. Not only does it illuminates our intellect with Divine wisdom, it also moves our heart and fills them with the nectar of Divine love. That is why it is said that this Srimad Bhagavatam or Bhagwat Katha has something that even the Vedas do not have. • In Srimad Bhagavatam in English - Part 3 by Swami Mukundananda : Dharma-The Path of Righteousness , Swamiji says that there are many rules for the speakers and listeners of the Bhagavatam. Those rules in this present age is practically impossible to follow. Now from here, we enter the Bhagavat Mahapuran. Ved Vyas-the author, begins by offering his respect to God and very carefully he doesn't take any name. Because he knew that this Bhagavat will be read by different people around the world. If he only offers his respect to Lord Krishna then the other devotees will say, it is not meant for us . If he mentions Lord Ram others will say same. So Ved Vyas made this non-sectarian and says, I offer my respect to the absolute truth. • Then he says in the second verse, in this Srimad Bhagavat, I am describing Dharma-the path of righteousness that has no trace of impurity- the pure Dharma which is the selfless love for God. • Then in the third verse, Ved Vyas says, Bhagavatam is the ripened fruit of Vedic knowledge and Shukdev Maharaj (the parrot) has relished it. The parrot is usually believed to have got better intellect than humans when it comes to recognizing which fruit is sweet. So the parrot tastes the sweetest fruit. Further, Ved Vyas suggests the listeners to drink this fruit. Now, when it's a fruit, how will anyone drink it? A fruit is meant to be eaten. The fruit of Bhagavatam is not an ordinary fruit. This fruit doesn't have any fibre, skin or seed in it. It has only juice.
