What did Japan do the day AFTER the Pearl Harbor attack?... • … Invaded the Philippines, that’s what! • On December 8th, Japan caught US forces on the ground when they launched their first attack on airfields north of Manila. General Douglas MacArthur, who commanded US and Filipino forces, led his troops through a series of renowned defensive manoeuvres over the next several months, though sadly it was a losing battle. • In the end, MacArthur was evacuated, and the remaining American and Filipino forces were too low on supplies to fend off a final Japanese offensive at the Bataan Peninsula. • • After the battle, the 76,000 remaining American and Filipino prisoners were led on a gruelling 66-mile march, later coming to be known as the Bataan Death March.
