King Stefan Decanski was dragged into the Byzantine Civil War of the two Androniks with Andronik II (1282 - 1328), receiving support from the Serbian king against his grandson Andronik III. The conflict decisively ended in 1328 with the defeat and removal of the old Andronik from the throne. The new Tsar saw Serbia as his enemy since it was his grandpa's ally. In 1330, he entered an alliance with the Bulgarian Tsar Mihajlo Shishman (Asen III).
