๐ This is the smallpox virus. ๐ฆ It infected pharaohs, devastated the Greek and Roman empires, and wiped out Native American populations. Nothing seemed to stop this deadly plague… until the late 18th century. ๐ • At that time, smallpox was a severe endemic disease, killing around 400,000 people annually in Europe alone, sparing neither rich nor poor. ๐ But for some reason, milkmaids and shepherdesses seemed immune to the disease. ๐๐ Dr. Edward Jenner, a rural physician, noticed that milkmaids who contracted cowpox, a mild disease, did not get smallpox. He hypothesized that cowpox could protect against smallpox. ๐งช • To test his theory, Jenner took cowpox from a milkmaid and inoculated an 8-year-old boy named James Phipps. Months later, he exposed James to smallpox, and the boy did not get sick. Jenner repeated the experiment with the same results. ๐ • Jenner’s discovery came long before the germ theory of disease was proposed by Jacob Henle and proven by Robert Koch. Inspired by Jenner, Louis Pasteur later demonstrated that weakened microbes could prevent diseases, coining the term “vaccine” in Jenner’s honor. ๐ • Nearly 200 years after Jenner’s experiments, global vaccination campaigns led to the World Health Organization declaring the complete eradication of smallpox in 1980, one of humanity’s greatest achievements.#cambioclimático • Smallpox #Vaccine #EdwardJenner #ScienceHistory #Vaccination #PublicHealth #Eradication #Biology #Education #LearnSomethingNew • A video by โช@scienseed4294โฌ for Ventana al conocimiento
