Aquilegia are commonly called Columbines and sometimes Granny Bonnets. They are a perennial plant from North America. • Over 60 species have been identified, however it is the colourful hybrids that we mainly see grown in garden borders and for sale. • Naturally growing in humus rich moist yet well drained soils, they also grow in part shade. A ideal positions morning sun and dappled afternoon shade. • Flower colours vary from pure white through to reds and purples. The foliage is attractive, very and occasionally variegated or marbled. • Varieties with long spurs are very popular, and a few species such as Aquilegia skinnerii and Aquilegia nevadense are well worth seeking out. • You can grow them from seed, and they will take a year or two to flower. They will self seed in the garden in good conditions and make an excellent addition to any cottage garden or perennial border. • These are a must for creating a woodland garden, and they do make very interesting cut flowers. They attract bees to the garden and for us are a very easy care and attractive plant. • After flowering you can collect the seed pods and save the seed. You can plant the seed the following spring, or simply sprinkle them around the garden and let them self seed. • For more information see http://www.nurseriesonline.com.au/pla...
