It is a notified area committee in the Baramulla district. It is 31 km (19 mi) from Baramulla and 49 km (30 mi) from Srinagar. The town is situated in the Pir Punjal Range in the Western Himalayas and lies within the boundaries of Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary. Gulmarg lies in a cup-shaped valley in the Pir Punjal Range of the Himalayas, at an altitude of 2,650 m (8,694 ft). The natural meadows of Gulmarg are covered with snow in winter, allowing the growth of wildflowers. The meadows are surrounded by forests of green pine. Due to its high elevation, Gulmarg has a humid continental climate where the wet winter season sees heavy snowfall, especially for its latitude. Summers are moderate in temperature and length, whereas shoulder seasons are cool. Gulmarg is the heartland of winter sports in India and was rated as Asia's seventh best ski destination. The town is accessible from Srinagar by road via Tang Marg. The road climbs uphill in the final 12 kilometres to Gulmarg passing through forests of pine and fir. Winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and heli-skiing take place on the slopes of Mount Apparat reachable by a Gondola lift. In February 2022, the world's largest igloo cafe was opened in Gulmarg. It was made with a height of 37.5 feet and a diameter of 44.5 feet. Around forty people can eat there at a time. In 2023, a glass igloo restaurant was developed by Kola Hoi Green Heights, a hotel in Gulmarg. Gulmarg has been the shooting location of many Bollywood films like Bobby, Aap Ki Kasam, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewana, Highway, Phantom, Haider, etc. Gulmarg has attracted millions of tourists throughout its existence with the scenic beauty of the Himalayan Mountains in the backdrop. One of the main attractions in Gulmarg is the Gulmarg Gondola, the Highest Cable Car in the world. April to June is the peak season to explore places to visit in Gulmarg.
