Wired is the first song from my Suite . Written to celebrate the one year anniversary of having brain surgery in order to regain my ability playing the saxophone. Writing this music was an important step to taking my life back as a jazz musician. After a 40+ year career I will go down swinging before I'll give in. So brain-surgery? Ending my career a jazz musician is much scarier. • Wired is a bit of a departure stylistically however it captures exactly the feeling post-surgery: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical technique used to treat Parkinson's Disease symptoms and now Focal Dystonia, which I have suffered from secretly for about 15 years. Briefly, it involved putting an electrode into my brain, which connected to a battery surgically implanted below my collarbone. Dystonia is a movement disorder affecting the ability to control muscle movements, in my case the left hand. Unfortunately it progressed to a point, making it impossible to play at a level necessary to perform and/or record. Robert van der Mark owner of Studio Code Blue https://studiocodeblue.com and / codebluerecords approached me saying he would love to record my music, being a fan of my earlier recording Joey Berkley's Bandits. His support and generosity throughout has been amazing, I am only grateful for the opportunity he has given me on my road back from brain surgery. • This recording showcases a lot of great talent. I am fortunate to have been involved with so many great players over the years. Plus, I am very excited giving an opportunity to some young talent-Adam Pasqual (keys/organ), is a NYU Music student, and Josh Sherwood (bass), is a student at the Westchester Center for Jazz and Contemporary Music, which I am the Director. As an educator, I'm very proud of both of their contributions to my music. Chris Parker (drums), needs no introduction. I have been fortunate to play with Chris for over 20 years in various settings, first of which was my band Funkasaurus Rex. The other Chris, Chris Biesterfeldt (guitar) is a reunion of sorts-we met each other musically in a hardcore jazz-funk, R'nB band led by trombonist/singer T-Bone. He was burning then, and obviously as you can hear on Wired he is still on fire. Percussionist Doug Hinrichs was recommended by Chris Parker- this is the first time we have worked together. What an impact he made! Hey, we have all hit a cowbell but Doug's skill on all of the gear, clearly tells me to put the tambourine down. • Wired is now available • https://fanlink.to/wierdjb • I sincerely hope you enjoy listening, • Joey Berkley
