One of Britain's most celebrated living artists, David Hockney, is pioneering the art world yet again, turning his index finger into a paintbrush and his iPad into a canvas in a new exhibit in San Francisco • Hockney, 76, started drawing on his iPhone with his thumb about five years ago, sending his works via email to dozens of friends at a time. • On Saturday, a sweeping new exhibit of Hockney's work, including about 150 iPad images, will open in the deYoung museum in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The museum is just a short trip for Silicon Valley designers who created both the hardware and software for Hockney's reinvention of fingerpainting. • The show is the largest ever for the de Young, featuring a survey of works from 1999 to present, mostly landscapes and portraits in an array of mediums: watercolor, charcoal and even video. But on a recent preview day, it was Hockney's iPad pieces, especially the 12-foot high views of Yosemite National Park, that drew gasps. • In one wide open vista, scrubby, bright green pines sparkle in sunlight, backed by Bridalveil Falls tumbling lightly down a cliffside; the distinct granite crest of Half Dome looms in the background. In another, a heavy mist obscures stands of giant sequoias. • Other iPad images are overlaid, so viewers can see them as they were created. He tackles faces and flowers, and everyday objects: a foot, scissors, an electric plug. • Hockney creates his work with an app built by former Apple software engineer Steve Sprang, called Brushes, which along with other dozens of similar programmes, are being snapped up by artists, illustrators and graphic designers eager to develop new finger and stylus techniques. • Hockney, who created 78 of the almost 400 pieces in the deYoung show this year, said he isn't giving up painting, or drawing, or video, or tablets, any time soon. • • Get the latest headlines http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ • Subscribe to The Telegraph http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... • Like us on Facebook / telegraph.co.uk • Follow us on Twitter / telegraph • Follow us on Google+ https://plus.google.com/1028913550727... • Telegraph.co.uk and / telegraphtv are websites of The Daily Telegraph, the UK's best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news and analysis on UK and world events, business, sport, lifestyle and culture.
